  Thallus ±orbicular, small, (0.5–) 1–3 (–4) cm wide, level with or slightly sunken into the substratum. Lobes concave, often crowded, ±cochleate, 2–6 (–10) mm wide, rarely branched; margins mostly entire, slightly sinuous, ±inrolled. Upper surface dark slatey blue-black to brownish when wet, olive-brownish to red-brown when dry, coriaceous, ±finely white-tomentose in parts, or only at the margins, ±scabrid, dull, isidiate; isidia initially button-like to peltate, becoming lobed, pale to dark red-brown, with thickened margins, occasionally white-pruinose, scattered to densely crowded, 0.2–0.5 (–1.5) mm wide. Lower surface pale yellow-buff to greyish or brownish, coarsely tomentose. Veins flattened or slightly raised, pale buff or brownish, 0.3–0.7 mm wide. Rhizines scattered, 1–2 mm long, simple to ±fasciculate, pale buff to brownish. Apothecia not seen in Australian specimens; reported as uncommon, 3–7 mm wide and saddle-shaped, with ascospores 49–59 × 5 µm (Vitikainen, 1994). Pycnidia not seen.
CHEMISTRY: No substances detected by TLC.
     
  Rare in N.S.W. and Vic., on soil at c. 1250 m and over terricolous mosses. Circumpolar in the Northern Hemisphere, but scattered in the Southern Hemisphere (including South America and New Zealand).
